All’s Well that Ends Well

We have come to the end of our course, EC&I 834 but it is the beginning of a whole new phase of instructional design for me.

I felt inadequate at the beginning but gradually overcame that feeling and made some baby strides in the use of technology in designing online course. Links, hyperlinks, H5P, though simple are major feats for me in this course.

Improving the Sustainable Community Development Course Prototype: Embracing Feedback for Greater Impact

I began developing my course prototype with a lot of trepidation, much like someone wandering through a thick forest with maze-like terrain. However, as I delved into it properly, my confidence began to grow. The readings and input from course mates, and guidance from Dr. Hildebrandt were a major boost to my confidence. I have received feedback on the course shell, module and profile from my reviewers and course instructor, for which I am most grateful. This feedback will undoubtedly strengthen my course prototype and help me create a more engaging program.

Addressing Feedback on the Module

The feedback highlighted areas of concern that I intend to address in the next module of the course.

Increasing Interactive Elements: To promote more engagement and active learning, I will incorporate more interactive activities and group projects into subsequent modules. This will enable participants to apply the concepts they’ve learned in real-world contexts and collaborate with their peers.

Structuring Feedback Mechanisms: Although I included a mechanism for feedback in the first module, I will further provide a clear grading rubric to offer more structured feedback on class discussions and assessments, giving participants a better understanding of their progress and enabling me to offer timely and constructive feedback to support their learning.

Simplifying Dense Readings: I will summarize and provide guiding questions so the major ideas are clear and the students can focus on the most crucial information.

Incorporating Real-World and Localized Examples: The opening module introduces sustainable community development and the ideas related to it, and thus, there are no case studies. There will be case studies and localized examples in future modules, as has been highlighted in my course profile.

Addressing the Course Profile Feedback

The course profile feedback provides guidance for increasing the transparency and accessibility of the course:

Making a Clearer Sense of the Rationale behind Digital Tools: I will further clarify the rationale behind each digital tool used in the course, setting out clearly why its unique characteristics serve towards certain learning outcomes and activities. This will allow students to have a clearer grasp of the aim and usefulness of the selected tools, thus making learning more intentional and meaningful.

Ensuring Equity in Digital Literacy: Addressing potential inequities in digital literacy, I will incorporate support mechanisms and scaffolding to address students with little digital skills, including tutorials, individual support, and the use of other means of participation for students who would struggle to participate through the digital means.

Clarifying Learner Expectations: As suggested, I will include a “Course Expectations” section in the profile that details the time involved, expectations of participation, and assessment requirements. This will help to provide clear guidelines and promote a shared understanding of the course structure and expectations, and a better, more equitable, and transparent learning experience.

Reflection on Accessibility and Equity

Based on week 10 class discussions and readings from Bates, (2019), some key considerations regarding accessibility and equity include:

Accessibility

  1. It is important to understand the characteristics and needs of the participant population. This involves analyzing any access requirements or provisions for participants who have disabilities or varying learning requirements. Ensure that course material and delivery forms are accessible within design.
  2. 2. The necessity to evaluate the usability of the selected media and technologies was stressed. Challenging or inaccessible platforms can pose barriers to students, particularly those with low digital literacy or accessibility requirements.
  3. Evaluating the institutional infrastructure and resources available to enable accessibility is important. Having the necessary infrastructure, training, and policies in place to enable accessible course design and delivery is imperative.

Equity

  1. Cost is not just about monetary expense, but also the time and effort required of students. Selecting affordable and equitable access to course materials and technologies is important to avoid excluding students based on economic status.
  2. Interaction: It is important to consider how different media and technologies can facilitate interaction and collaboration. Ensuring all students have equal opportunities to engage and participate, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities, is crucial for an equitable learning experience.
  3. It is also important to consider how these technologies may differentially impact students from marginalized or underrepresented groups.
  4. Evaluating the privacy and security implications of the selected media and technologies is essential, as issues in these areas can disproportionately affect vulnerable student populations.

In the Sustainable Community Development course, I have made concerted efforts to ensure accessibility and equity, but there is always room for improvement. Some key considerations include:

Accessibility: The course currently utilizes a range of digital tools like Google Classroom, Google Docs, H5P and video content. While these platforms are generally accessible, I will continue to review how compatible they are with assistive technologies and make necessary accommodations for students with diverse needs.

Equity: I will strive to create a learning environment that is inclusive by bringing in local examples, different learning activities and structured feedback mechanisms, while at the same time continuing to identify and address any potential barriers to participation.

I will continue to seek and respond positively to feedback, and work on the course’s accessibility and equity. By applying the suggestions from the feedback and remaining committed to continuous improvement, I am confident that my course prototype will be strengthened and more engaging.





Creating Meaningful Engagement for Learners in the “Sustainable Community Development” Course.

This course is designed for adult learners from diverse backgrounds. To create meaningful engagement for the learners in the course, I plan to utilize and implement a variety of learner-learner and learner-instructor interactions, each serving a specific purpose and justification.

1.         Learner-Learner Interactions- Forum Discussions and Zoom breakout Rooms

a.         Collaborative Project-Based Learning

Rationale: Learners must take part in group collaborative project activities. This allows learners to take part in group work, which promotes a collaborative culture among learners where learning happens between peers, as well as the cultivation of critical thinking and real-world problem-solving abilities.

Implementation: Learners are to be grouped and asked to come up with a community development planning proposal for their particular locality. They will develop strategies and guidelines that are environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable. There will be peer review sessions in which students will be encouraged to critique each other’s views in an effort to achieve continuous improvement of the projects.

b.         Case Study Discussions

Rationale: Review and discussion of case studies of sustainable community development projects will make it easier for learners to comprehend and utilize best practices and apply these in their own communities.

Implementation: Learners will be divided into small groups for discussions and analysis of the case studies that are presented. They would be encouraged to give their comments and suggestions from the case studies and formulate actionable points for their communities.

c.         Peer Feedback and Reflective JournalingForum Discussions

Rationale: Allowing students to exchange their thoughts, reflections, and insights will help develop a critical peer learning culture which improves the quality of learning.

Implementation: Learners will be encouraged to keep reflective journals during the course, in which they record their learning experiences, problems faced, and possible solutions. Learners will conduct peer feedback sessions, in which they will present their journal entries for feedback from their peers.

2. Learner-Instructor Interactions

a. Instructor-led Lectures and Discussions

Rationale: Instructor-led lectures alongside discussions are crucial to provide the initial building blocks for concepts and frameworks of sustainable community development which is the core of active learning in the course. This will start with an introduction of the instructor in the first class during the synchronous live session.

Implementation: The instructor will deliver engaging lectures, include multimedia components, and lead class discussions to cover relevant concepts, models, and practices throughout the course.

b. Guest Speaker Presentations

Rationale: Through guest lectures delivered by experts and practitioners or community leaders, students are able to appreciate new and deeper insights towards sustainable community development as drawn from their real life experiences.

Implementation: The instructor will arrange for guest speakers to present, interact with students, and answer questions so that students can benefit from their knowledge.

c. Office Hours and Individualized Feedback

Rationale: Conducting targeted office hours for small groups or individuals provides the opportunity to further guide students as well as attend to some specific learning concerns while providing feedback on their work.

Implementation: The instructor will conduct regular office hours and be approachable to learners needing pointers on how to clarify issues arising from their undertaking, as well as questions about their projects and feedback on their work.

To ensure that these interactions are meaningful, supportive, engaging, and relevant, the following guidelines and assessment practices will be adopted

Guidelines

  1. Course expectations, learning objectives, and grading criteria will be clearly communicated to set the tone for meaningful engagement.
  2. Evaluate the outcomes of the collaborative project-based learning activities regarding the course concepts and the complexity of the problems proposed as well as the solutions offered.
  3. Encourage students to reflect on their individual learning journeys through self-reflective journal entries and self-presentations.
  4. Obtain regular feedback from students informally and through formal course evaluations to inform the course design and interaction formats.
  5. Adapt teaching strategies and interaction formats based on student feedback and ongoing assessment of their learning needs.

Assessment Practices

Determine the quality and extent of student participation with regard to the case studies discussions and peer reviews.

Examine the results of the coursework project detailing the application of course theory, solving methods, and the effectiveness of the solutions provided within the context of the identified issues.

Help students conduct a self-evaluation of their learning and achievements by means of reflective journals and presentations.

Gather regular feedback from students, both informally and formally through course evaluations, to continuously improve the course design and interaction formats.

This and other forms of learner-to-learner or learner-to-instructor interaction, along with the developed guidelines and assessment methods, will guarantee that the “sustainable community development” course is appealing, constructive, and adequately contextual so students can learn knowledge and skills in community development that is sustainably effective.
